Summary/Abstract: In her paper Andrea Zlatar discusses the contribution of the French theoretician Philippe Lejeune to this field of research. Singling out the theoretical, interpretative, and historical aspects of his work she attributes prior importance to his definition of the autobiographical contract and the attempt of a contextual definition of autobiography. Narrowing his historical research to the period of »Modernity«, from Rousseau to our own days, Lejeune insists on identical retrospective narrative form in the first person which prevails in 19th and 20th century autobiographies. In the later phase of his work Lejeune has devoted his attention to non-literary autobiographies (newspaper, radio, and TV interviews as well as to ethnologie materials of oral statements on life). In his two latest books his attention has been attracted by a special type of autobiographical discourse - the diary, which thematically concludes his exploration of autobiographical literature.
