Summary/Abstract: The 19th century, and above all its second half, was the period when Croatian litarature was increasingly becoming part of the tendencies prevalent in the mainstream of European literature. This is also true of versification, and it refers to the penetration of accentual and accentual-syllabic verse, together with the adoption of foreign poetic forms which the Croat poets adapted to their own linguistic medium, sometimes using their own poetic tradition as the basis. The paper deals with one aspect, the accentual verse by August Šenoa and Rikard Jorgovanić, but also with the stanzaic structure of poems in which accentual verse was used. Foreign influences, primarily from Germany and England, manifest themselves on both levels. An attempt is made to answer the question as to how far the Croat poets were aware of the consequences of their decision to adopt a new type of verse organisation. Such decisions were of great importance for later development of Croatian poetry.
