Summary/Abstract: This study is based on some documents preserved in the diplomatic archives of the Consulate of Portugal in Galaţi. The issue of the Portuguese interests in the area of the Lower Danube has not been sufficiently treated in the Romanian historiography. The interest shown by the Portuguese political and economic circles for the trade and the navigation at the Lower Danube represented a constant element of the Romanian-Portuguese relations. Portugal wanted to turn the Romanian market into a market of its outlets. The economic relations between Romania and Portugal were not at the same level as those between the members of the European Commission of the Danube. The Sulina Channel was still the only way of access to and from the Danube for the commercial ships. Therefore, the ports from the Lower Danube had a major role in the foreign trade. This study aims at synthesizing the multitude of political and economic relationships that were created on the basis of the issue of the maritime Danube, between 1919 and 1940.
