Summary/Abstract: On January 1, 2017, the city of Opole expanded by twelve village councils (sołectwo) or their parts from neighboring municipalities. This was the largest expansion of the city borders in its post-war history. As a result, the decision was made to rename 162 streets. This article is an attempt to outline the nature of these changes and, through their prism, to grasp contemporary trends in the urban naming of Opole. The first part of the paper outlines in general terms the successive stages of naming new streets in Opole, particularly in the context of the expansion of the city boundaries through the incorporation of successive districts: Nowa Wieś Królewska (1955), Kolonia Gosławicka (1961), Groszowice (1965), Gosławice (1974), Bierkowice, Grotowice, Grudzice, Malina, Wójtowa Wieś and Wróblin (1975). In the following section, the author looks at the process of changing street names in 2017, focusing on individual districts and analyzing the issue from the perspective of the systematic meaning of the new names. Analyzing the problem from this angle, it is noticeable that the vast majority of new names are derived from common words, in particular from terms connected to nature. A smaller group comprises names derived from proper names, among which the author’s attention is particularly attracted by the names commemorating local heroes. Subsequently, a classification of the meaning of all new street names is presented. The most comprehensive part of the article includes a detailed review of all changed street names in individual districts: parts of the city within the old borders, Borki, Brzezie and the part of Dobrzeń Mały, Chmielowice, Czarnowąsy, Krzanowice, Sławice, Świerkle, Winów, Wrzoski with Karczów, and Żerkowice.
