Summary/Abstract: The liturgical-musical codices of Płock are an important source of knowledge for the study of Gregorian monody and the post-Gregorian forms derived from it. Transmitting (in addition to the classical structures of Latin monody) local works in the form of rhymed offerings, tropes, sequences, hymns, liturgical dramas and even the earliest local folk songs, they prove the high level of musical culture of Płock during the Middle Ages. The unique nature of these sources constitutes the primary phase for undertaking detailed analytical research on the Latin monody of the Płock region and the history of liturgical music in Poland. The books from Płock, in which the achievements of the West have been reproduced to varying degrees, allow us to grasp the process of formation of the local liturgical and musical tradition. The article presents a selection of the chants of the Mass liturgy most distinctive of the Płock sources (alleluia verses, sequences, tropes) and breviary liturgy (rhymed offices, tropes, hymns, liturgical dramas), as well as the so-called Płock Easter tropes – the oldest church songs based on Latin hymns and sequences. The recalled liturgical compositions, through their specificity, testify to the high rank of the Płock region. This study is only an attempt to summarize the results of research published so far in this area, showing the qualities of Płock liturgical and musical manuscripts.
