Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to find out if boys and girls from urban and rural areas have the same motivation related to participation in sport activities in school. 85 students from Rădeni Secondary School and 95 students from Mihai Eminescu National College, with ages between 11 and 15 years old, participated in the study. The sample was stratified across the choice to attend physical education lessons and team school sports training. To determine the level of motivation of participation in sports activities in school, a Sport Participation Motivation Questionnaire with a list of 30 items and 8 sub-dimensions was applied. Statistical analyses were processed as descriptive statistics with SPSS 20.0 for IBM. Results indicated that factor “Relaxation and wellbeing through sports” is the most important reason of participation in school sport activities for students from urban areas and girls from rural areas. Boys from rural areas are interested in participating in school sports activities for “Popularity”.
