Summary/Abstract: The Euphorion is the first volume of essays that the critic will publish, being more of a manifesto book since he begins the critical approach by clearly defining the concept of art, then meditating on the concept of criticism, in order to finally propose a personal style of criticism. In this volume the critic pleads for the autonomy of the essay and will theorize hermeneutic criticism as "the art of opening the work", the first step being precisely finding the right keys to open and decipher the secrets of an artistic work. The critic will bring up the famous dispute between Calinescians and anti-Calinescians, emphasizing the idea of Calinescian criticism which lacks precisely these keys to fit the work. The Euphorion volume is built according to certain principles and directions aimed at freedom of expression and the evolution of the critic, as Balotă considered that the value of a critic increases when he succeeds in proposing readings, hence the wish of the exegete to broaden his cultural horizon, proposing the works foreign authors and philosophers (Dante, Saint-John Perse, Eliot, Joyce, Becket, etc.).
