Summary/Abstract: In the article „Happiness” in the carceral space - an opportunity for fulfillment and spiritual elevation, a complex structure is highlighted, used by many former prisoners, including Nicolae Steinhardt in his Journal of Happiness. Specifically, it highlights the significance of the events and experiences during the detention period for those who were incarcerated in the communist prison system in Romania. The time spent by those imprisoned in communist prisons in Romania had a significant impact on them. Many former prisoners have stated and testified that the years spent in the communist carceral space in Romania represented true moments of self-surpassing, self-knowledge, fulfillment, and rediscovery. Therefore, former prisoners considered the carceral experience an opportunity to live unique emotions and feelings, a chance for fulfillment and self-surpassing. They shaped their characters and overcame the hardships of carceral life with stoicism. The memoirs belonging to the literature of the Romanian Gulag convey the authentic emotion and experience of those who chose to share the uniqueness of the carceral experience through writing.
