Summary/Abstract: In the article Moral values in the communist carceral space, the existence of moral values among those incarcerated is presented, along with their manifestation through attitudes and actions. The concepts of care for others, sacrifice, martyrdom, and solidarity became values that materialized into normal attitudes and actions, despite being dangerous and risky. I have included testimonies from former prisoners, which confirm the capacity for sacrifice and solidarity among the prisoners, as well as the constant care they had for one another. Thus, I highlighted that in prison, friendship was redefined and became a strong bond between prisoners, in their struggle not to give in. True friendships were formed in communist prisons, expressed through small gestures but from the heart, and these bonds lasted even after they were released. All prisoners shared a common denominator, called dignity, which many preserved during their time in prison and thwarted the plans of their tormentors. The preservation of dignity at any cost was the strongest weapon of the incarcerated against the totalitarian communist system. I also highlighted the concepts of conscience and freedom, two closely related concepts that cannot be separated. Conscience is represented by a person's psyche and moral values, and it is what judges a completed action, evaluating it based on moral principles. In the prison environment, freedom takes on different meanings and, in many situations, is identified with each individual’s ability to introspect, rediscover themselves, and focus on their spiritual experiences.
