Keywords: toponymic cultural concept; toponym as a keyword of culture; toponym as a universal; national; individual precedent phenomenon

Summary/Abstract: Modern linguistics shows great interest in toponymic concepts. This article proves that this category is heterogeneous, with the toponym qualified as a cultural concept, a keyword of culture, and a universal, national, or individual precedent phenomenon. The paper develops criteria for each category, shows that the status of a toponym may change, and offers examples of toponymic concepts and related phenomena based on E. S. Otin’s dictionary. The research considers a number of cultural concepts (such as Russ and others) and analyzes the keywords of Russian culture, universal precedent phenomena-toponyms, and national precedent phenomena-toponyms, some of which developed symbolic properties. It also shows that individual precedent phenomena depend on an individual.
