Summary/Abstract: The professional specialization of teachers, as the most important links in the educational system and the development of competences, represents an important step towards better performance of the profession and improvement of the level of achievement of the students. Competencies represent a set of necessary knowledge, skills and values of teachers' attitudes. The aim of this paper is to point out the importance of developing and acquiring teacher competences, as well as explaining the ways and possibilities for professional improvement of geography teachers. Regarding professional development, the basic roles of geography teachers were analyzed and their classification according to different authors was performed. Through big number of examples from practice, the role of geography teachers is specifically explained. Professional specialization and the role of teachers are mutually conditioned, which is especially emphasized in the work.
