Paszport psa ‘a dog’s passport’, paszport covidowy ‘COVID passport’, paszport do szczęścia ‘a passport to happiness’: New meanings and uses of the word paszport ‘passport’

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at exploring the semantic innovation paszport ‘passport’ in Polish. The analysis involves a comparison of the traditional meanings of the word (taken from dictionaries of Polish: USJP, WSJP PWN, and WSJP PAN) and new meanings in texts excerpted from the Internet. Additionally, OED is consulted for the definitions of its English counterpart (passport). The study shows that the word paszport appears in new meanings and new collocations (usually triggered by English), and its development in Polish can be seen as multi directional. Additionally, the author discusses a word from the normative point of view and concludes that it is often overused and its new uses are not always warranted and necessary.
