Summary/Abstract: Low fertility is a growing problem in Polish society. Previous analyses of the macro- and micro-social determinants of biological reproduction explain the causes of declining fertility, but do not refer the fundamental processes underlying procreation planning and thus are insufficient to explain why we have such a low fertility rate. This article provides an answer to the question of why attempts to bond a stable intimate relationship face barriers due to cultural rules of matrimonial selection and patterns of relationship development, which hinders the proper matching, and thus the decision of women and men to have their first child. The analysis enriches knowledge of mismatch and provides a complementary description of the factors inhibiting fertility.
