Summary/Abstract: The peasant family is approached in the context of the social modernization program designed by Dimitrie Gusti and the Sociological School from Bucharest and implemented, at the national level, between 1934-1940, under the auspices of the ‘Prince Carol’ Royal Cultural Foundation. Based on various documentary sources (documents from local archives, publications of interwar reformers), the analysis is focused on the social-educational function of the peasant family within peasant schools, revealing the perspectives of the approach in the development of educational consciousness. The study is structured in four parts. The first one contextualizes the popular education movement in the European and Romanian space. The second reveals the outline of several directions in the development of peasant schools until the beginning of their generalization under the aegis of the foundation. The third part addresses the educational cultural ideal and the purpose of the ideal education in the peasant schools of the foundation, with an emphasis on the vision of the reformers regarding the social-educational function of the peasant family. The last part represents an applied analysis of the theoretical programs of three types of peasant school in Oltenia, revealing the set of knowledge that, in the logic of the reformers, was necessary for the formation of an educational consciousness of the peasantry. The study, aiming to complete the state of knowledge regarding rural modernization, responds to a need for a specialized analysis of the subject in the regions of Greater Romania, the problem of the peasant family in Oltenia, in the stated context, not yet being represented in the specialized literature
