Summary/Abstract: Formation of words in Slavic languages, particularly in Polish, is both complex and productive, making it challenging to learn, especially for bilingual children whose second language is not Slavic. The primary issue discussed in this article is the evaluation of word-formation competence in the context of modifying derivatives (including diminutive and augmentative forms, as well as feminine forms) of Polish children aged 5–9, living in Ireland, hence bilingual in Polish and English. The language material serving as the basis for this analysis was obtained during a study conducted among a group of thirty bilingual children. The research results enabled us to identify differences in language development between monolingual and bilingual children, and to point out the factors influencing the acquisition of word-formation competence.
