Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the problems raised by homonymy between place names and common nouns. It attempts to analyze the relationship between the inflection of place names and that of their homonyms. The grammatical gender, inflection pattern and syntax of place name is regulated mainly by usage. However, there are numerous convergences between the grammar of place names and the grammar of common nouns. Most similarities can be observed in (grammatically) uncountable (singulare tantum) names and their common counterparts. It can be assumed that both inflect in the same way. It is more difficult to find a proper paradigm for the plurale tantum place names, since their inflection is not the same as their common homonyms.
