Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on two problems. The first one is an awkward pronunciation of the Polish sounds [ś], [ź], [ć], [ʒ́]. The authors argue that the palatal consonants are often realized as prepalatal ones. The authors also present typical phonetic distribution of the sounds [ś], [ź], [ć], [ʒ́]. The second problem is the phonological interpretation of the prepalatal sounds. The distribution of the sounds [s΄], [z΄], [c΄], [ʒ ́] and their oppositions leads the authors to suggest that they should be thought of as allophones of /ś/, /ź/, /ć/, /ʒ́/ respectively. However, in literature the sounds [s΄], [z΄], [c΄], [ʒ ́] are described as allophones of /s/, /z/, /c/, /ʒ/.
