Summary/Abstract: The article puts forward a hypothesis stating that indifference is a type of conduct which brings about the feeling of dismay. In order to prove the hypothesis the author refers to collocations of the adjective {obojętny} (indifferent) by showing its etymology and changes in meaning. The article presents three usages of the adjective {obojętny} which are given by dictionaries of contemporary Polish. Apparently, each usage has a different syntactic structure. The author focuses on one of the usages of the adjective obojętny and points out to the fact that in order to speak about indifference one needs at least two people who have different attitudes.
