The World Hidden in the Meaning and the Meaning Undisclosed in the Dictionary. About the Adjective {obojętny}

Summary/Abstract: The article puts forward a hypothesis that {obojętny} (indifferent) points at the variety of the world. In order to prove the hypothesis the author shows the etymology and changes in the meaning of the adjective {obojętny}. The article presents one of the definitions of the adjective {obojętny} which are given by dictionaries of contemporary Polish. The author focuses on choosing components of the definition of the adjective {obojętny} and tries to verity it and confront the meaning of {obojętny} and {nieokazujący zainteresowania} as well as {niezainteresowany}. Logical operations (conjunction, disjunction, implication) lead to the conclusion that the adjective {obojętny} has a very specialised meaning which should not be explicated by {nieokazujący zainteresowania}. The meaning of {obojętny} has a common component with the meaning of {niezainteresowany}.
