Summary/Abstract: Cooperation between Japan and NATO has only recently begun to attract the attention of researchers. During the Cold War, regardless of the shared sense of threat from the USSR, geographical distance and different priorities in the field of defense did not create a need for collaborations. With the end of the bipolar world, an entirely new and dynamically changing international environment is emerging, which presents Japan and NATO with new challenges. Developments in NATO’s partnership policy on the one hand, as well as the transformation Japan‘s national security strategy has undergone, have made possible the evolution of their relationship in recent decades. The present study aims to trace the development of this interaction and analyze the potential and limitations of their cooperation.
