Summary/Abstract: The summer of 1982 proved to be a crisis for Japan's relations with the Republic of Korea and the PRC. The reason is the incorrect information about the Japanese history textbooks published in the Japanese press, which provoked sharp reactions from Seoul and Beijing. Despite the grip of an international scandal, this journalistic mistake exposes long-standing controversies in Japanese society to the general public and turns the interpretation of history into a diplomatic problem with long-lasting consequences for the East Asian region.
