Summary/Abstract: In 1991, with the declaration of Macedonian Independence onset a series of transformations, which led to a boost in economic and social pursuits by the Albanian population of the young republic. At its foundations was financial influx from the oversees diaspora, which resulted in accumulation of wealth and in the ascent of many Albanians, who demonstrated their new affluence and with it – social superiority. The prominent Albanian presence in social life and the loss of privileges for the Macedonians, led to assigning blame for the lost positions to the Albanians. There were also changes in the sphere of education, with a steadily increasing share of the Albanian students, who during the transitional decades were a negligible percentage. The number of women with higher degrees also rose, some rising to leadership positions or entering politics. All of this led to the gradual transformation of the Albanian community of the Republic of Northern Macedonia.
