Summary/Abstract: This article examines various modern and traditional techniques, approaches and methods of teaching foreign languages and underlines their role in the educational process over the years. The traditional methods analysed in this article are the following: the Direct Method, the Grammar-Translation Method, the Audio-Lingual Method and the Communicative Language Teaching. Particularly attention is also paid to the innovations in the field of didactics, mainly to those methods that are in use today.
