Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The paper covers the subject of excess consumption. Referring to the role and effectsof consumerism on the functioning of modern economies, societies, and in the life of every person/consumer. The considerations aim to answer the question: can money buy happiness? Research method – The method used in this study is analysis using secondary sources. Due to the research topic, the work is descriptive in nature and consists of an overview of theoretical aspects regarding happiness, values, consumerism, and the relationship between economic growth and happiness. Results – The results of the analysis indicate that consumerism, i.e. excess uncontrollable consumption, which is a manifestation of hedonism, leads to a crisis of personal values and economic crises. The problem of consumerism is one of the key problems of the modern world in many aspects and, through the degradation of the value system, it poses a huge threat to the future of mankind. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – Considerations of consumerism are of a philosophical and social nature with elements of economics. This approach to the topic is an added value in terms of economics. The study points to new directions of potentially interesting research. In the aspect of personal values, economic crises may lead to a re-evaluation of priorities and a new hierarchy of values that guide us in life. In search of the implications of crises for personal values, the article draws attention to the importance of economic crises.
