Summary/Abstract: The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused changes in the functioning of people around the world. The consequences of the pandemic and the restrictions introduced to minimise infection with the virus are the subject of a plethora of research. One of the groups that is particularly vulnerable to both contracting COVID-19 and experiencing negative eff ects of the pandemic is constituted by the persons serving the penalty of deprivation of liberty in penal institutions. Thus, the objective of author’s own research was to try to identify ways of coping with the diffi cult situation represented by the pandemic and its consequences as perceived by the persons serving the penalty of deprivation of liberty. The main research problem consisted in the question: What consequences of the pandemic do the examined prisoners perceive and what ways of coping with this diffi cult situation do they use? The research was conducted in the second quarter of 2021 using a diagnostic survey method and author’s own survey questionnaire. The examined group consisted of 429 persons serving the penalty of deprivation of liberty. The obtained research results allow to conclude that persons serving the penalty of deprivation perceive changes as troublesome for them in the following areas: contacts with the loved ones, work, a sense of freedom, mental health and self-development. In addition, respondents declare that they try to be better towards others more often than before the pandemic as well as they read more and think about the loved ones, which are recognised as the ways of coping with the diffi cult situation. No statistically signifi cant diff erences were found between the persons serving the penalty up to a year and convicts being in isolation for more than 12 months in terms of the perception of the eff ects of pandemic. However, the length of stay diff erentiates the examined persons solely in terms of the frequency in the manifestation of aggressive behaviour. With regard to other ways of coping with the diffi cult situation, there are no statistically signifi cant diff erences between the groups.
