Summary/Abstract: In the recent research studies done by media researches, teachers, and educationalists on the role of new media in formation and humanistic education, many different phenomenawere mentioned, including the phenomenon of digital natives, opportunities and threats of the cyberspace, functioning of texts on the web, educational functionality of virtual worlds,e-learning’s role in education, “the new language” in electronic media, literary hypertexts, “scattered knowledge” and hypertextual reading, convergence of media, management ofschool’s educational information, and – broadly defined – educational roles of the media. One of such challenges of the contemporary school education is the e-textbook: interactiveand divided into content and multimedia layers; enriched with advanced multimedia elements, animations, and simulations; featuring easy navigation between sources; providing interactive exercises; ensuring the user’s systematic work with the textbook; publishable on educational web portals; accessible on many different devices; enabling printing of selected fragments; and publishable on e-learning platforms, with the option to review educational progress in terms of the whole textbook or its parts.
