Summary/Abstract: The author of the article argues that the prose by Ransom Riggs affects the reader through colours, sounds, smells and flavours, while the narrative poetics refers to both the thriller and horror novel and symbolism of mental images, the world of romantic historiosophy and transcendence, as well as the absurd humour resembling a specific character of Alice in Wonderland. What plays an important role in the story is: individual memory and an extraordinary dialogue between generations, a special emotional relationship, a unique emotional understanding that Jacob and his grandfather have at the beginning of the story, and the boy’s great desire and commitment to discover the secrets of his grandfather’s biography. However, it is the author’s fantasy that, above all, constitutes the artistic dominant in the story. It, by activating deep layers of imagination and emotions, opens reading minds to ‘other’ worlds.
