Summary/Abstract: Youth unity in Yugoslavia was weakened when a part of Croatian youth supported the Mass Movement (1970-1971) at the time when both Croatian nationalists in Party ranks and Croatian clergy unexpectedly but simultaneously began relying on popular culture and rock and roll in their activities with Croatian youth. In order to curb Croatian nationalism (and any other nationalism) Party leadership gave directives to expose young people to more Marxist doctrine which be ca me an integral part of the educational system of Yugoslavia in the 70s. As far as musical education was concerned, extra curriculum activities were organized by the Musical Youth of Yugoslavia - Jeunesses Musicales(by its republic and city levels organizations) which only offered to young people musical education of high artistic value (classical music). Among the most important Rock and Roll bands that perpetuated the memory of the socialist revolution and Tito’s heritage were Korni grupaand Bijelo dugme. Rockers demanded to have more social engagement and libertine influence. Hundreds of thousands of young Yugoslavs listened to patriotic messages in texts and slogans of domestic groups apart from listening to the usual rock and roll songs.
