Summary/Abstract: This study examines the new dynamics faced by students enrolled in German language teaching programs and faculty members providing education in this field at universities in Turkey, following the Ministry of National Education's (MoNE) decision to transition German language courses from compulsory to elective starting from the 2023–2024 academic year. The research was carried out on students enrolled in the German language teaching programs at Trakya University and Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University. The study, conducted using a descriptive research method, aims to describe and understand the effects of the transition from compulsory to elective status for German language courses on students' motivation. As a result, the MoNE’s decision to make German a noncompulsory course has adversely affected the motivation and language skills of students enrolled in German language teaching programs. The challenges faced by students in their language learning processes constitute the fundamental reasons behind this change. In this context, it is recommended that universities revise their language learning processes and develop new educational strategies. Additionally, it is crucial to develop effective promotional strategies to make language teaching programs more appealing and increase student participation. These recommendations could guide institutions offering education in the field of German language teaching in shaping future educational policies.
