Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the complex nature of the optative mood and its different interpretations in linguistics. The functional approach allows an integration of language items of different levels used to express wish, hope and desire. The focus of analysis is on the range of lexical and syntactic means for expressing the optative category and the way these meanings are presented in bilingual translation in Russian and Bulgarian.
