Summary/Abstract: This study looks at Albanian dialect syntax, a matter largely omitted from dialectologial studies in Albanology. More specifically, this study provides a state-of-the-art review of the work done with respect to dialect syntax in Albanian by reclassifying all the features found in different variants of Gheg and Tosk dialects. Each feature is accompanied by geographic location found, examples produced in various studies, as well as the authors that accomplished the fieldwork. The unique dialect features in this study have been defined based on Jacobson (1980) which states that syntactic features of dialect variations should a) be descriptively synonymous, b) belong to the same semantic category and c) act functionally comparative. An example of this would be the lack of articles (in several syntactic contexts), which is a unique feature of several variants within Albanian dialects. Following this analytic review is a brief explanation of syntactic microvariation according to the generative theory of syntax. This explanation suggests that syntactic microvariation is possible through mechanisms that allow as many lexical units as needed to combine into different syntactic paradigms. The selection of the right lexical units needed for the derivation depends on language internal rules, as well as sociolinguistic and communicative factors.
