Summary/Abstract: After the breaking of relations between the Soviet Union and Albania and the latter’s departure from the Communist Block, the relations of the Albanian Labor Party (ALP) with the communist and labor parties across the world, among which, with the Italian Communist Party (ICP), became quite tense. In the subsequent years, it became obvious that the ICP and ALP were not forthcoming to settle their disputes. While the ALP and ICP were divided in their paths, the Albanian communist leaders started their quest for potential allies among the Italian communists who were dissatisfied with the new political course taken by the ICP. On the one hand, this would contribute in propagating “the successes of the Albanian socialism” in Italy and on the other, would convince the Albanians “of the just struggle of the ALP against revisionism”. The Marxist and Leninist groups established in Italy in the early 60s’ were inspired and influenced by the ideology of Mao Ce Dun’s China. Although a part of them were impressed by the courage shown by Hoxha in confronting Khrushchev, still for the Italian revolutionary communists the ALP was just an intermediary between them and great China. Even to the most ardent supporters of Albania among the Italian communists, the ALP was a young party, (much younger than ICP) which was leading a small and poor country. However, this was not how Enver Hoxha perceived himself and the ALP at the time. The documents in the Albanian archives attest that E. Hoxha tried to take the role of the mentor, who would show to European communists, among which the Italians, the way to unification and true Marxist Leninist values. It is the goal of this article to examine the methods used by the ALP’s leaders in pinpointing the appropriate Italian Marxist Leninist group which would be used as the core of the future ICP. Furthermore, there will be analyzed the reasons for the appointment of Fosco Dinucci as the head of the new party and the failed attempts of the ALP to persuade Pietro Secchian, the senior Italian communist, to take the lead of the Italian Marxist Leninist groups.
