Summary/Abstract: From the mid-seventeenth cen- tury, Southern Africa experienced a period of far-reaching changes linked to Euro- pean commercial and colonial activity. This was the only area of Africa down to the mid-nineteenth century that saw European settlement on any substantial scale, and, in consequence, changes in local societies. The article examines the significant role played by horses in these processes.
