Summary/Abstract: The role of Africans in history of South Africa changed with time. At the beginning of professional historical writing, historiography concerned itself with the European exploration and expansion in Africa, and the colonial conquest of the continent. Suchan attitude prevailed until the 1960s. Only then did the Africans’ place in historical processes of this region start to change. They started to be seen as a force and factorin itself. But it was not the end of the process. Their history became a battlefield of ideological confrontation, and for some, a tool of political propaganda. As a result, today it is mostly seen as the fight against colonial conquest and European domination.
