Summary/Abstract: The development of organic farming is one of the priorities of the EuropeanGreen Deal. The paper presents the current status and directions of development of organicfarming in Poland. An important issue is the gap between the growth rate of the numberof farms and the area under organic cultivation and organic agricultural production usedfor food purposes. The development of organic farming in Poland is presented againstthe background of its development in the European Union. First, the dynamic increaseof the number of organic farms and areas under organic cultivation occurred from 2005to 2013. A second important feature was the development of organic farms in regions(and municipalities) characterised by relatively poor natural conditions for production. Inaddition, the decision to start organic production was taken by farmers who owned farms notonly in worse natural conditions but also with a low level of production intensity. Significantdifferences were found between the share of organic crop area in utilised agricultural areaand the share of organic production in total agricultural production, especially its share inthe balance of food products. The crop structure of organic farms was found to be favourablein terms of biodiversity and climate.
