Summary/Abstract: Research on the stepfamily (reconstructed family, blended family, patchwork family) is well-advanced in foreign historiography. No systematic research on this issue has been published in the Polish literature. A look at the problem of the foster family within the Radziwiłł family is another attempt of the author to shed light on this subject in Polish historiography. In the article, she indicates which of the male members of the Radziwiłłs created a foster family throughout the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries (15 cases) and how many Radziwiłł children lived in such a family or were related to it. She also lists problems stemming from the magnate’s stepfamily, including inheritance and cohabitation of children from previous relationships, and off ers examples of confl icts in the stepfamily and, on the other hand, the relatively harmonious functioning of its members.
