The Professional Purposes of Visually Impaired Students

Summary/Abstract: Specialists indicate the importance of professional self-determination of visually impaired students [3, p. 158]. S. Armonas a vice-chairman of Association of blind and visually handicapped in Lidiuania (LASS) says that more visual impaired schools' graduates enter to universities, study successfully, but many visually impaired students don't choose profession so can't realize themselves and become a burden for a state. A profession's choice question is very importam to a young person. A part of these students don't perceive the result of their disability and don't estimate critically their own possibilities so they want to choose professions which need eye-sight as a driver, a doctor, etc. (Gudonis, Rovienė, Bartaševičienė, Jankevičienė, 2005). V. Gudonis (2005) maintains that more comprehensive research are necessary analyzing thi question. A. Navickis (1985, 1988) investigated the professional purposes and professional orientation of visually impaired students in Lithuania. It is very importam to appraise the person's learning motivation and the motives of profession's choice, the professional orientation and the professional purposes. An impaired eye-sight limits professions' choice. The goal of the work is to investigate the professional purposes of blind and visually handicapped students learning in 6-10 forms. Students of 6-10 forms have participated in the research: 40 respondents learning in Kaunas social education centre for blind and visually handicapped (22 boys and 18 girls) having visual impairments and 40 (11 boys, 29 girls) students without visual impairments learning in Pavenčiai secondary school in Kuršėnai. In totai 80 students have participated in the research. The mediods used in die research are die analysis of scientific literature, questioning of students, a quantities and qualitative analysis of die results and a comparative analysis. The analysis of literature shows that visually impaired persons clash with problems in such spheres as cognition, an orientation in space, a practical work, feelings and communication. The effective support helps to compensate and correct all troubles. The analysis shows that the stereotypes about visually impaired persons' inferiority, through ignorance of their possibilities they have problems looking for a job. Analyzing literature about visually impaired persons' professional orientation it can be maintained that the state changes its politics with respect to disabled persons. A great part of visually impaired students have a positive learning motivation. They often follow practical future motives. Students without visual impairments have a prestige motive which is very importam. The results of the research discover that all (100%) of investigative are decided what profession they want to choose and where to work.
