Summary/Abstract: In 2012, Germany commemorated the 300th anniversary of the birth of Frederick II, also known as Frederick the Great, with a series of grand events, particularly in Brandenburg, where Prussian tradition remains strong. The celebrations included more than a dozen large-scale exhibitions in Berlin and Potsdam, highlighting various aspects of Frederick's life and reign. The exhibitions presented Frederick as a complex figure, celebrated for his role in elevating Prussia to a European power, yet controversial due to his despotic tendencies and philosophical contradictions. Exhibits explored his personal life, military achievements, artistic interests, and influence on German history, blending facts with legend. Some displays focused on his international relations, others on his daily routine, cultural passions, or financial reforms. While the exhibitions generally portrayed Frederick positively, downplaying his role as a conqueror, they sparked renewed discussions about his legacy in modern Germany.
