Summary/Abstract: Whistling, one of the types of communication, is an action as old as human history. Throughout the ages, human beings have used whistling for various purposes and have diversified and developed it until today. In this respect, whistling has been reflected in the daily life of human history in different ways, both functionally and religiously. Nowadays, it is possible to see whistling in many parts of our lives. It can sometimes appear as a means of addressing a distant person, sometimes as a musical instrument, or sometimes as a means of protest during an action. Whistling, which has a versatile structure, can be said to have effects not only on these but also on beliefs. There are various beliefs related to whistling in many parts of the world. Considering these beliefs, it can be thought that whistling sometimes brings misfortune to a person and sometimes brings good luck. In this study, whistling was examined as a type of communication and the functions of whistling in our cultural life were emphasized. These functions are divided into various headings such as communication function, protest function, musical function. It has been examined under these headings, taking into account both historical and contemporary examples. In the continuation of the study, beliefs about whistling both in the world and in Turkish society are discussed.
