Summary/Abstract: The article examines the phenomenon of stage illusion, as exemplified in the historic case of creative collaboration that developed between Ukrainian theatre director Hnat Yura and artist Anatol’ Petrytskyi and spanned almost three decades in the first half of the 20th century. Analysed are different types of stage illusion that the Yura-Petrytskyi tandem employed in the course of their collaboration, including those that were based exclusively on their own creative ideas and preferences as well as those born out of perceived necessity to conform to the ideo-logical guidelines of the Soviet regime. The analysis reveals substantial changes that occurred in the tandem’s theatrical aesthetic over time and thus determined its eventual choice of the illusion type. In conclusion, the author points to the overpowering and clearly derogatory impact of the socialist realism concept on the tandem’s final collaborative efforts.
