Summary/Abstract: The article examines the phenomenon of what is known within the professional community as the immersive theatre. The focus is placed on such a key feature of this type of theatre as its changing relationship with a viewer, who with the advent of the immersive theatre effectively ceased to be an instant observer of what was happening around and became its active participant. In effect, the same viewer eventually turns into someone who leads the action, as it were, determines the final and thus even assumes responsibility for the artistic output as a whole. The author analyses how immersive theatre performances provoke such a spectator activity, enticing the public to discuss socially impor-tant and contentious issues. Three performances that have recently been staged in Ukraine serve the factual basis for this analysis, along with some explication notes provided by direct participants of the staging process.
