Summary/Abstract: Electricity was introduced to Cyprus in 1903 by the British colonial government, who installed an electric generator to serve the needs of the governor in Nicosia. Until 1952, when the Cyprus Electricity Authority was established, the availability of electricity on the island spread at an extremely slow pace, while in rural areas it was practically non-existent. The methods used to produce and distribute electricity are uneconomical, which hinders the rapid expansion of supplies and their potential contribution to the growth of the country's economy.
