Summary/Abstract: Critical thinking is the ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information objectively and logically. This ability enables people to make reasoned and informed decisions by questioning assumptions, exploring alternative perspectives, and using evidence to draw conclusions. The report examines the attitude towards critical thinking as a skill on one hand and as a quality on the other within institutions related to higher education over the centuries. The overview is confined within the framework of European civilization and traces the development of understanding what critical thinking is and how it is cultivated in philosophical schools from Ancient Athens through significant historical periods in the development of higher education to the present day. In addition to the general approach to critical thinking, the report explores the role of teachers in this process, seeking to conclude, through historical analysis, their role as intermediaries between traditional pedagogical methods and the influence of new digital technologies.
