Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to apply Häussermann and Siebel’s concept of festivalisation to the current state of culture in Poland, with particular emphasis on the phenomenon of festivals. First, the festival is presented as a part of European cultural heritage that is ancient in origin. Next, the development of festivals in the twentieth-century Poland is discussed, including the growing differentiation among them and their increasing number. In conclusion, the author attempts to assess festivalisation, its negative and positive characteristics, taking into account its impact on the overall cultural sphere, funding channels, distribution of public resources, forms of reception of culture, and the types of participation at public events. It is suggested that Polish festivalisation is somewhere between the paradigm of McDonaldisation and the active co-creation of culture.
