Summary/Abstract: This article presents the formation of Baudouin’e de Courtenay’s scientific profile and his contribution to the development of linguistics at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. From today’s point of view, he was thoroughly modern and in many places went beyond the prevailing paradigm of the time. He influenced both Young Grammarians and structuralism, and introduced a number of new concepts into linguistics.
