Summary/Abstract: John Fowles's debut, The Collector (1963), represents a special case in all his oeuvre in that it has been overshadowed by the subsequent novels like The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) and The Magus (1965). However, his first novel is no less interesting and problematic than other works. As will be shown in the rest of this paper, the book tackles a number of Fowles's favorite topics such as freedom, love and its intrigues and the detrimental effects of a suffocating environment. The present emphasis is laid on the flamboyant differences between the captor Clegg and his prisoner, Miranda. The artistic disposition and discourse will be contrasted with the scientific ones, with all the sociological and psychological implications.
