Summary/Abstract: The following is an attempt to explore the image of the artist in Nathaniel Hawthorne's ' The Artist of the Beautiful'. It begins with giving a brief idea and the general conceptions held about the artist and the nature of his activities. The rest of the paper is devoted to showing the various manifestations of the story, particularly the great extent of misconception and bias raised against the artist and his different reactions. The biographical aspects of the story are stressed as it talks directly about Hawthorne's own position as an artist in a very circumscribing environment (New England).
