Summary/Abstract: The self-complacent old man of the rhetorical tradition and the despairing old man represent two extreme attitude. The author’s insisting on them urges the reader to think of the variety of our attitudes towards life within the plurality of contradictory values in which we move, and of the difficulty to understand the world and ourselves within this world. Between the two extremes, there is an infinity of ways to live with one’s old age. Besides the philosophical aspects, there are also social, economical and cultural aspects of old age in modern fast-changing society as compared to past centuries or traditional societies.
