Summary/Abstract: One should not hurry to judge something as true or false, as if these two notions were distinct of even antagonistic categories, as long as we are denied the access to the essence of truth and as long as in various epochs art developed by openly imitating, plagiarizing and resorting to illusion, fake, and chimeras. Art has always copied art. A particular case is that of the counterfeiters whose only purpose is to make profit through forging real objects (paintings, money). The author has chosen the stories of some of the most spectacular counterfeiters of the past three centuries, but also of the way in which sound and image can be used nowadays to distort reality or to create the illusion of reality.
