The “Heritage” Awards and the Self-Representation of Bulgarian Museums

Summary/Abstract: The text examines the ways of self-representation of Bulgarian museums to their audiences. The main source material are the applications from the contestants for the „Heritage“ awardsof the Association of Bulgarian Museums from their establishment in 2016 to 2023. For the indicated period, 73 nominations of national, regional and municipal museums were made, which indicate to possible ways of presenting the heritage and different models for implemented cultural policies aimed at the public. The ways and means of communicating the collections,their exposure and contextualization are analyzed. Working practices and creative solutions are also outlined for the enlivening of museum spaces, engaging audiences and like-minded people, and expanding the circle of involved persons. Museums‘ self-representation is a key method for constructing the vision for their public display. Thus, the following questions come to the fore: how museums today present themselves to communities, audiences or other organizations, which elements of cultural heritage they choose to display, what stories they create, how they involve and engage the public, how much and in what way they develop and improve themselves as institutions, and to what extent they succeed in forming workable and sustainable cultural policies for the benefit of society.is the applications from the contestants for the „Heritage“awards of
